The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a last eight place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
