Burns Dismissed on his Opening Delivery in Ashes series
The opening ball in a series represents much more than just one ball.
It embodies an heart-pounding two or four moments of pure theatre, when all of the pre-series hype ultimately ceases.
"To define that tone for the whole series would be really cool," commented England paceman Gus Atkinson when asked regarding this possibility lately.
"I understand there have been multiple historic opening-delivery occasions in Ashes history. The possibility to contribute that legacy would be amazing."
As the bowler notes, the opening delivery has created some of the truly iconic Ashes instances - ones that appeared to define the tone or at least became easy to look back on afterwards...
Captain Ben Stokes closed innings at 393-8 just before stumps during the first day in 2023's Ashes contest
Zak Crawley had spent his lead-up to the 2023 Ashes series contemplating striking the first ball to a boundary - about hoping to "create a message."
Australian captain Pat Cummins charged in at Edgbaston and Crawley drilled a shot past the covers to roaring cheers by the England supporters.
"I've long been a big admirer regarding the opening delivery of the Ashes," the opener revealed.
"I was watching them from growing up so I understood several weeks before that should we won the toss it meant a strong possibility of facing that ball."
"I discussed to Brooky about it when we were playing golf in Scotland - that it would be special if I could get that first ball for runs to deliver an impact."
England didn't claimed that series - while the Australians dramatically took that first match on last day - but it was a preview at how Stokes' side would attack throughout the summer.
England were bowled out to 147 on day one of the 2021-22 series
This moment in Birmingham remains one of the few first deliveries that went the way of the English, however.
Significantly more often they've served as warning indicators regarding Australia's superiority that would be following.
On 2021's series, Mitchell Starc dismissed England batsman Rory Burns via a half-volley at Brisbane becoming the initial bowler claiming a wicket on the opening delivery of a contest since Australian seamer Ernest McCormick in 1936.
England's preparation had been poor and in that instant during Australian jubilation England took a blow to their morale.
"My spirit simply fell to the floor," said bowler Stuart Broad, watching watching from the dressing room.
"You have built toward this series then immediately, opening delivery, he's dismissed."
The series were gone within 11 additional days while Australia claimed the series four-nil.
Slater made 176 in the first innings of 1994's Ashes, having cut the opening ball of the contest to boundary
It's also unsurprising an Australian skipper who thrived in "mental disintegration" thought proceedings were set through an identical moment twenty-seven before.
Steve Waugh with Australia were seeking their fourth Ashes win consecutively as batsman Michael Slater started the 1994-95 contest by decisively crunching English seamer Phil DeFreitas to boundary through the offside.
"It felt as if 'okay team we're off again we've got them now'," recalled the captain, who would feature every matches during three-one home victory.
"In our minds it was as if we are on top already and we should continue hammering away. We know how we beat these guys."
Ominous.
Australia made 602 for 9 declared during innings one following Harmison's wide, with skipper Ricky Ponting making 196 runs
But suppose that delivery proves just that - a single among 10,000 or so beginning the series?
The errant delivery Steve Harmison delivered to start the 2006-07 Ashes - when he hurled the ball toward the grasp of skipper Andrew Flintoff at the slips, almost avoiding the cut strip in the process - has become the most iconic Ashes opener ever.
"I froze," the bowler told journalists shortly after.
"I let the significance of the moment overwhelm me. Everything felt so alien for me. My entire being felt tense."
"I couldn't get my hands to stop sweating. That initial delivery flew out of my hands, the next also slipped, and, after that, I possessed no consistency, nothing."
The English claimed the 2005 series 15 months earlier but were resoundingly beaten 5-0. Some argue that series ended in that very instant.
"We simply weren't skilled enough to beat
