Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Fighters Party

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a exciting storyline showcasing angels, demons, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of characters who will branch out from the primary party to undertake their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering an extensive roster, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

Per the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might seem unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment demonstrate why these five characters are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group understands precisely where to go next after a intense first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

Casimir then paid off his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, north of the city, with Cyd close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each adventurer has a individual motive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, wants vengeance.
  • The adventurer knows the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their position as key figures in the powerful family could help the team enter locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, Teor vowed a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are wanted by the authorities that rule the city for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This results in them little choice but to head to Timmony in search of the traitor.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to assemble the Explorers and Strategists groups.

Viewers can look forward to learning which players will be where in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on October 24.
