The British boxer Anthony Joshua has been released from care, Nigerian authorities announced on Wednesday evening. The 36-year-old was involved in a car accident near Lagos on Monday, a tragic incident that took the lives of two of his valued colleagues.
Joshua had been receiving medical attention while healing from his light wounds, his promoter confirmed on Monday. The commissioner for information and strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced via a post on X that Joshua was deemed clinically fit to leave and heal privately.
“The boxer and his mother were at the funeral home in Lagos this afternoon to offer their condolences to his two friends who passed away as they were being prepared for repatriation,” Omotosho said.
The victims of the crash were confirmed to be Latif Ayodele, Joshua's trainer, and Sina Ghami, a performance coach. Omotoso added that the boxer was “heavy-hearted and deeply emotional over the passing of his two close friends.”
The news of his discharge comes as the global fight fans offered sympathy for the fighter in the wake of the devastating accident.
