A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the year.
The winning bid for the 243kg fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which operates locations across the country and internationally.
"The year's tuna signals a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a regular figure at the annual new year's auction.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is noted for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.
After the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "astonished at the winning bid," stating, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price soared in no time."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his own record purchases:
Even after once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to break his own record another time.
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously known for exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be served at its eateries nationwide.
The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly prepared for patrons at the winner's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction concluded.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one elated patron.
