The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai sank a crucial birdie from around eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory over Fleetwood.
Rai started the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, finishing one shot behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
