The Christmas holidays provide a multitude of pursuits much better than scanning the headlines: unwrapping gifts, getting stuffed on festive fare, and employing patience techniques to refrain from snapping at relatives. It is wished you succeeded in accomplish all these things and more. That said, the world of entertainment doesn't go on vacation, and this is especially true for the realm of anime. Numerous exciting developments emerged over the holidays, and should you didn't see any, here is a compilation of the juiciest bits.
Truly the most shocking revelation, the much-discussed disaster that was the third season of One-Punch Man proved insufficient to halt further production. The show will be back with a subsequent part in 2027—so far away they could have called it season 4. More surprisingly, animation studio J.C. Staff will remain leading the project. At least this time, director Shinpei Nagai is set to direct from the beginning, which is seen as a positive development. But, the promotional image for the new episodes is a mirror of the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou looking opposite ways. This leads one to believe that, nowadays, they could be teasing the fans.
Kyoto Animation has forged a reputation for being an elite animation studio, making its mark not just for the high caliber of its productions but for the good working conditions of its employees—a uncommon practice in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had not adapted an anime based on a manga from Shonen Jump, possibly the most iconic magazine in the business. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a great choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo became a huge following when it launched in 2022 after just a handful of installments, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the mangaka's health issues. When it returned with a lighter schedule, the series demonstrated it still retained the fans' support and enthusiasm, and now everyone is thrilled about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the highly popular, long-running Shueisha manga that is other than One Piece. If you've never heard of it before, it's because it only recently got an English translation, but the anime has been airing for years, and its sixth season was yet another outstanding entry. It turns out that was just the first cour, because a "sequel" has been confirmed as in development, and it will almost certainly air in 2026.
One more studio famous for the excellent quality of its work, Science Saru has delivered hit shows of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, lastly, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be handling the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, based on the real historical figure of Fatima, an powerful woman and intellectual in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime named Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a distinctly fresh and captivating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Set to premiere in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my must-watch list.
Right after the airing of its twenty-fourth episode, it was confirmed that Tougen Anki will be receiving a sequel. Inspired by the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki brings to life the manga by Yura Urushibara. The second season of the anime will adapt the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a firm air date has not been disclosed yet.
